Frequently asked questions
What format do the line items take?+
Description, quantity, unit price, separated by vertical bars: "Design work | 10 | 120". Two fields is a flat fee — "Retainer | 1200" — and a description on its own is a note with no amount, which is useful for section headings or explanations mid-invoice.
Why does the total sometimes differ from a spreadsheet?+
It should not, and that is the point. Amounts here are held as whole cents from the moment they are read, so no total drifts by a rounding fraction. Each line is rounded once, where it is printed, so the number on the page is exactly what a reader gets multiplying the quantity by the unit price on a calculator.
Is tax calculated before or after the discount?+
After. Taxing the pre-discount figure charges your client tax on money they never paid, and it is not what any tax authority expects. Fractional rates work exactly too — 8.875% is a real combined rate and comes out right rather than a cent off.
Can I add my logo?+
Not yet. The layout is deliberately typographic, which keeps the PDF small, the text selectable and the invoice readable when it is forwarded, printed or fed into accounting software. If you need letterhead, generate the invoice here and merge it onto your letterhead with the merge PDF tool.
Does it number invoices for me?+
No, and deliberately: your numbering has to be unique and unbroken across everything you issue, and only you know what the last one was. The number you type goes on the invoice and into the filename so the file is easy to find later.
Are my client details uploaded?+
No. The PDF is built in your browser and the figures never leave your machine. An invoice names your client, your rates and what you were paid — commercially sensitive on both sides, and not something to hand to a free website.
