Should I extract to WAV or MP3?+
WAV when the audio is going into an editor, a transcription service or any further processing — it adds no new losses. MP3 when you just want to listen to it or send it, since a WAV is roughly ten times the size for no audible benefit at that point.
Is WAV higher quality than the MP4’s audio?+
No. The MP4’s audio is already compressed, and decoding it to WAV cannot restore what that compression discarded. What WAV avoids is adding a *second* generation of loss, which is why it is right as an intermediate.
Why is the file so large?+
Because it is uncompressed — every sample stored in full. Stereo 44.1 kHz 16-bit is about 10 MB a minute regardless of content. That is the trade for a format nothing else has to decode.
