Frequently asked questions

Does transparency survive?+

Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent in the SVG, and partly transparent pixels — the soft edge around an antialiased logo — keep their exact opacity. Drop the result onto any background colour and it will sit on it cleanly.

What about an animated WebP?+

Only the first frame is traced. An SVG produced this way is a still image; if you need the animation, convert to GIF with WebP to GIF instead.

Will this work on a photograph?+

No. A photo has thousands of subtle colour gradients, and tracing collapses them into flat blobs — the result looks like a bad poster effect and the file is larger than the WebP. Tracing is for artwork with solid areas of colour. For photos, use WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG.

My WebP logo has fringing around the edges — why?+

WebP can be saved lossy, like JPG, and lossy compression smears sharp edges slightly — the tracer then follows the smear and turns it into extra colour regions. Lowering the Colours setting merges those fringe pixels back into the nearest solid colour; 2 removes them entirely on single-colour artwork.
