Frequently asked questions
What does flattening do, and should I leave it on?+
It draws your answers into the page itself and removes the interactive fields. Leave it on for anything you are sending somewhere. An unflattened form keeps its values in widgets that some mobile viewers and print drivers ignore entirely, which is why a form that looked filled on screen sometimes prints blank. Turn it off only if the recipient needs to edit it further.
Nothing appeared when I dropped my PDF in. Why?+
Because the file has no fillable fields. A scan of a paper form is just an image of a form, and a PDF exported flat from a word processor has no field data either. There is nothing to type into in that case — you would need to write on it as an image instead.
Why are the field names strange?+
Because they are the names the form's author gave them, and official forms are often generated by software that produces names like topmostSubform[0].Page1[0].f1_01[0]. The readable part is shown as the label and the full name appears when you hover, so a field can still be matched against the document.
Can it fill in a signature field?+
No. Digital signature fields hold a cryptographic signature rather than text, and buttons do not take a value either. Both are listed as skipped rather than hidden, so you know they were seen and left alone.
Is my filled-in information uploaded?+
No. The form is read and written entirely in your browser, and the finished file is created on your own device. For a W-9 or a medical form that is not a nicety — a service that uploads the document has already received your Social Security number or your health history.
