What tip percentage should I use?+
In the US, 15–20% of the bill is customary for sit-down table service, with 18% a common middle ground and 20% or more for service you’d like to reward. Counter service and takeaway are usually tipped less, if at all — set whatever percentage fits the situation.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?+
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach, though many people tip on the final total for simplicity. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount and the calculator applies the percentage to exactly that number.
How is the per-person amount calculated?+
The bill plus tip is divided evenly by the number of people — it doesn’t account for people ordering different amounts.
