WAV to Opus Converter

Runs in your browser — your files are never uploaded.

Convert WAV to Opus, the codec that wins decisively where bandwidth is tight. Below about 96 kbps Opus is clearly better than MP3 or AAC, which is why WhatsApp, Discord, Signal and WebRTC all use it. It is a poor choice for compatibility — most car stereos and older players have never heard of it — and an excellent one for anything that will be streamed or sent.

Frequently asked questions

When is Opus the right choice?+

Anywhere size matters more than universal playback: voice notes, podcasts, game chat, anything streamed. At 64 kbps it sounds better than MP3 does at twice that, which is a large margin. For a file someone will load into a car stereo, choose MP3 instead.

Why do my voice notes arrive as .opus?+

Because messaging apps encode them that way — it gives usable speech at a fraction of the data. Use the Opus to MP3 converter if you need one to play somewhere that will not open it.

What is the file extension really?+

Opus audio is carried in an Ogg container, so .opus and .ogg are both technically correct and some tools use them interchangeably. This writes .opus, which is what current software expects.
