Turn a recording up or down by a fixed amount. The control is in decibels rather than a percentage, because loudness is logarithmic: +6 dB is roughly twice as loud, and a slider reading "200%" tells you nothing useful about either the result or how close it is to distorting. If a file is inconsistently loud rather than uniformly quiet, normalising it is the better tool.

Frequently asked questions
How many decibels should I add?+
+3 dB is a clear but modest lift, +6 dB sounds roughly twice as loud, and +10 dB is a large change that will distort anything already near the ceiling. Start at +3 or +6 and listen before going further.
Why does it sound distorted after boosting?+
Because it clipped. Digital audio has a hard ceiling, and gain applied above it flattens the tops of the waveform into a harsh buzz that cannot be undone. Use Normalize Audio instead — it raises loudness with a true-peak ceiling that prevents exactly this.
Can boosting recover a very quiet recording?+
Only up to a point. Raising the signal raises the noise floor with it, so a recording made far too quietly gets louder and hissier rather than clearer. The information that was never captured is not there to recover.
Should I use this or normalise?+
This one when you know exactly how much louder or quieter you want everything — matching a clip to others, or pulling down a track that is too hot. Normalise when the file is inconsistent within itself and you want it evened out.
