I have an iPhone photo — is this the right tool?+

Almost certainly not. Tracing is for flat artwork with solid areas of colour, and a photo is the opposite of that: thousands of subtle gradients that come out as a blotchy poster effect in a larger file. Use HEIC to JPG for something small and shareable, or HEIC to PNG for a lossless copy.

So when is tracing a HEIC worth it?+

When the HEIC does not actually contain a photograph. A screenshot, a diagram, a logo, a scanned or photographed line drawing with strong contrast — anything already made of flat tone. For those, set Colours low: 2 for black-and-white line art, 8 for simple colour graphics.

Why is the first conversion slow?+

No browser except Safari can decode HEIC, so a decoder has to be downloaded the first time. It is cached for the rest of your session, and everything after that runs at normal speed.

Are my files uploaded?+

No. The decoding and tracing both run in your browser on your device — your photo is never uploaded.
