Why do iPhone photos come as HEIC?+

HEIC compresses photos more efficiently than JPG at the same visual quality, saving storage space. Apple made it the default camera format in iOS 11, but plenty of software elsewhere still expects JPG.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?+

No. Decoding runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly — the same sandboxed technology browsers use for high-performance code. Your photos are never sent anywhere, which matters since HEIC files are usually personal photos.

Does it work with Live Photos?+

It converts the still HEIC image. The motion component of a Live Photo is a separate video file (.mov) that isn’t part of the HEIC and won’t be included.

Why does the first conversion take a moment?+

The browser downloads a one-time WebAssembly decoding engine (about 3 MB) the first time you use this tool. It’s cached afterward, so repeat conversions on the same page are fast.

Does converting lose photo quality?+

There’s a small re-encoding step (HEIC’s compression to JPG’s), but at the default high quality setting the difference is not visible in normal viewing.
