Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t this work on PNG files?+
PNG compression in a browser canvas is always lossless — there’s no quality dial to turn, so “compressing” a PNG this way wouldn’t meaningfully shrink it. If a PNG’s file size is the problem, convert it to JPG or WebP first (smaller formats when some quality loss is acceptable), then compress.
What quality setting should I use?+
70–85 is a good starting point for photos — noticeably smaller with compression artifacts that are hard to spot at normal viewing sizes. Go lower for thumbnails or background images where quality matters less.
Does compressing change the image dimensions?+
No — only the encoding quality changes. Use the Image Resizer first if you also want to shrink the pixel dimensions, which reduces file size further.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?+
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser’s canvas — the image is never sent to a server.
