Why does my photo look banded?+
GIF stores a maximum of 256 colours, while your JPG holds up to 16 million. Smooth skies and skin tones are where that shows first, as visible steps between shades. Keeping the palette at 256 minimises it, but cannot remove it.
Which is smaller, JPG or GIF?+
For photographs, JPG — usually by a wide margin, since it was designed for exactly that. Converting a photo to GIF generally makes the file bigger, not smaller, so only do it when a specific site or app requires .gif.
Can I make an animation from several JPGs?+
