Will the image look worse?+

Possibly. GIF stores at most 256 colours, so a photographic PNG will show some banding. Screenshots, logos, icons and line art usually convert with no visible difference at all.

Is transparency preserved?+

Yes, but reduced to on/off. Fully transparent pixels stay transparent; partly transparent pixels — soft shadows, anti-aliased edges — become either solid or fully clear, which can look slightly jagged.

Can I animate several PNGs instead?+

Would PNG not be the better format to keep?+

Almost always, yes. PNG is lossless, supports millions of colours and full alpha transparency, and is accepted nearly everywhere. Only convert to GIF when something specifically demands it.
