How much smaller will the JPG be?+
Dramatically — a 10 MB BMP photo commonly lands somewhere around 300–600 KB. BMP stores raw pixels with no compression whatsoever, so there is a great deal of room.
Will the image look worse?+
JPEG is lossy, but this encodes at 92% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the source for photographs. For screenshots and sharp-edged graphics, convert to PNG instead — JPEG artefacts show badly around crisp text.
Should I choose JPG or PNG?+
JPG for photographs, where it wins hugely on size. PNG for screenshots, diagrams, logos and anything with text or hard edges, since it stays perfectly sharp and is still far smaller than the BMP.
What happens to transparency?+
JPEG has none, so any transparent areas in a 32-bit BMP are flattened onto white. Use BMP to PNG if you need transparency kept.
